3 weeks ago we replaced the pureflow control unit, because ours failed a conductivity test. I primed one pak and made one sak, and when I went to do the next sak it said pak exhausted. I put our back up one in it and it wouldn’t prime the pak. Nxstage sent more, and a USB drive to pull the information from our machine. We went through about 4 paks before they decided to replace the control unit, again. So far I’ve primed a pak and made a sak. Hopefully this one works decently for a while. I can’t stand hanging bags everyday.  And I have social anxiety so I hate talking on the phone! And I was on the phone with them at least once a day.

Strawberry High Protein Fruit Smoothie Recipe

Portions: 1

Serving size: 1 cup, approximately (egg whites increase volume slightly)

Ingredients

• 3/4 cup fresh strawberries
•  1/2 cup liquid pasteurized egg whites
• 1/2 cup ice
• 1 tablespoon sugar

Preparation

1. Place strawberries in blender and blend until smooth.
2. Add all remaining ingredients and continue blending until smooth.

Helpful hints

• Pasteurized liquid egg white is safe to consume without cooking.
• If substituting frozen fruit add 1/4 cup water instead of the 1/2 cup ice. The degree of “frozenness” will determine how much your blender will be able to take. It will also give a more “soft serve” consistency than a smoothie, which is great in the warmer season.
• Adjust sugar or low calorie sweetener to taste.

Dialysis Patients and Temperatures

If you are a dialysis patient, you most likely know that your temperature runs a little lower than normal people. For example, grandma’s temp. normally runs about 96.5-97.0 degrees Fahrenheit. If your temperature runs 2 degrees above what it normally does, then that’s considered a fever for dialysis patients. Which in turn could indicate a cold, infection any many other things.

Most people ignore taking their temperature. But I recommend taking it several days to weeks daily, so you know what your “normal” temperature is.

If grandmas reaches 99.2 degrees, we automatically give her something to prevent it going higher and we call the treatment center HHD (Home hemodialysis) nurse, and follow her instructions. If there is redness or the fistula/ graft feels warm to the touch that could indicate an infection in the fistula/graft. I fully recommend seeing your doctor at that point.

Zesty Chicken Wings

Diet types:

Serving size: 2 wings

Ingredients

• 4 green onions
• 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
• 1/4 cup honey
• 1/4 cup brown sugar
• 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
• 2 teaspoons all spice
• 2 teaspoons dried thyme
• 2 teaspoons hot sauce
• 1 teaspoon ginger
• 1 teaspoon minced garlic
• 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1/4 cup lime juice
• 1/4 cup cranberry juice
• 7 pounds chicken wings

Preparation

1. Chop green onions.
2. Mix all ingredients except the chicken wings. Set aside 3/4 cup of marinade.
3. Place chicken wings into a container, or large re-sealable plastic bag. Pour the extra marinade over wings.
4. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator 4 to 6 hours.
5. Preheat oven to 350° F.
6. Place chicken wings on a baking sheet, and bake for 20 minutes.
7. Meanwhile, in a small sauce pan, bring reserved 3/4 cup marinade to a boil. Reduce by 1/3 until it thickens slightly to a glaze (approximately 10 minutes).
8. After 20 minutes remove chicken from the oven, and brush wings with the glaze.
9. Raise oven temperature to 400° F and cook chicken wings about another 20 minutes, until done.
